Your New Unique Doberman Puppy Care, Feeding and Training

Your Unique Doberman Puppy
In your Unique Doberman, you have purchased one of the finest Dobermans available worldwide.
Not all people should own dogs and even fewer should have a Unique Doberman; but for those who will take the extra effort to properly raise their Doberman puppy, the rewards are more than compensating.
With the proper care, feeding and training, your Unique Doberman puppy can grow up to be the beautiful, loyal and intelligent watchdog and companion for which his breed is recognized to be and for what it is so well known for and highly prized.
The breeding of this World Champion Sired and World Champion titled Dam produced litter is such that with the proper care, feeding, Show / Schutzhund training, several individuals in this litter are capable of being taken to their championship titles in multiple disciplines!
Your Unique Doberman puppy has had the advantage of excellent European breeding consisting of World Champion conformation titled sires and dams along with amazing working ability in agility/obedience, tracking and personal protection bite work as evidenced by their IPO, VPG, ZTP and Schutzhund titles, this superior genetic heritage combined with continued good care from you will now determine what your Unique Doberman puppy amounts to when it's full grown, and now the way he/she develops and grows from now on is largely up to you.
Your Unique Doberman puppies Temperament:
Unique Dobermans have been bred to provide you with an excellent stable family temperament! Without excessive sharpness which would endanger neighbors and friends, they will be an alert and very protective dog, please understand this is what they have been bred for over a hundred years to be. For the good of both you and the Doberman breed, we recommend they be raised to be a gentle and very social family companion and loyal protector. A Doberman is of no use if it's locked away in a bedroom when company comes over or if it's never taken to town to protect and provide you companionship while on city sidewalks or shops.
Your Unique Doberman can easily be trained to be an effective or even vicious dog; however, if so trained he/she may well cause you a greatly disproportionate share of grief and inconvenience for each possible time his over-protectiveness will or could be of value.
Your Doberman puppy must be well socialized with Humans to be of any protective value! He must allow welcome guests into your home, greet the meter reader, UPS, FED-X, the mailman on your property etc. Your family Doberman will always sense your feelings and respond accordingly! Keep that in mind next time he/she surprises you!
Your current puppy handling and early training of your family Doberman will direct his future temperament. A dog not well socialized and used to people will be unsure and sharp so let your dog know early that visitors will neither harm him nor require his protection of you. Visitors and strangers need not pet or be overly friendly with your Doberman puppy they just need to be in the same room observing and watching. Chaining a dog or confining it to a small place away from people is very harmful to his temperament and cruel to a Unique family Doberman, he/she is not able to protect you if he is kept away from you, he will know this and it will cause him/her a great deal of separation anxiety!
Give your new puppy all the love and companionship you can, especially the first week or two because he is still lonely. homesick and has just left his large family and the only humans he has known since he gasped his first breathes.

8 Tips on Training your Family Doberman Puppy
Here are some of our suggestions for Feeding:
Since prior to weaning, your Unique Doberman puppy has been fed the very best food and vitamins available. We feed our weaned puppies at least 4 times per day; this can soon be reduced to 3 times at 12 weeks and at full growth around 18 months of age you can reduce feeding down to twice a day. It is best if they are continued to be fed twice a day to prevent food issues such as stealing, guarding or even deadly gastric bloat.
Try to keep your puppy plump but not overly FAT, you should be able to easily feel his ribs but not see them.
A wide variety of good quality food will aid your Unique Dobermans health and growth. A carrot or other vegetable will be a good treat for him from time to time and is better than allot of the treats offered at the pet store. Avoid feeding raw eggs. An adequate fat content (organic coconut oil) of his diet will provide a smooth, healthy coat. Most of all remember if you want your puppy to look like it's parents, that will only happen if you continue to care for and feed him as we have, he will only develop and grow as well as you feed him!
Here are some of our suggestions for Exercise:
Exercise makes the dog.... Free running in a fenced yard improves the gait and hardens the muscles of dogs of any age. We do not recommend road work for younger Dobermans under 12 months and then only sparingly paying close attention to their energy level, your Unique Doberman will want to keep up at all costs.
Your Unique Doberman puppy has been raised freely and has roamed and played on 10 acres of varied terrain. From before weaning he has been exposed to many different things outside, this develops his idea of his world, Boldness, Courage, Curiosity and Intelligence.
We take great care to introduce him slowly to new situations and experiences to develop his full potential, nothing is allowed to frighten or harm him.
Here are some of our suggestions for Handling:
Your Unique Doberman puppy has been handled since birth. We begin stacking him up for evaluations as soon as they are standing at 3 weeks. He is accustomed to being stacked for the show ring since he can remember!
While you are handling or exercising your puppy, be particularly careful of his feet, a crushed foot can end a potential Show / Schutzhund career. Do not lift your puppy up by the shoulders or front legs! The proper way to pick up your puppy is by gently placing your hands or arms under and in front of his front legs and behind the rear legs.
Keep any practicing for the show ring or Schutzhund field fun and rewarding and you will retain his winning willingness to please attitude!
Here are some of our suggestions for Housebreaking:
There are as many different theories as people on this topic. Housebreaking really can be quite easy and quick. Your Unique Doberman puppy has now reached or will soon reach the age that permits effective potty training. Nearly all dogs are intrinsically "Clean" and will avoid soiling their own premises if at all possible - their mother has already taught them this. In fact, they are essentially already housebroken and the major problem is to avoid untraining them when they get to your home!
To continue their housebreaking, merely (pick him up) take your puppy outside where you wish him relieve himself EVERYTIME he wakes up no matter how briefly he slept and EVERYTIME he finishes eating or gets up and stirs sniffing around looking around for a spot to relieve himself. When he's still small PICK HIM UP because of his young age and inability to control his bladder he might not be able to hold it that long!
Work hard on housebreaking for the time necessary is short and it if you are not paying attention to your young puppy you will pay for every accident you let happen as it is a huge step backwards and causes confusion for your pup. Just like with children, consistency is the KEY!
Prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you will create him or confine him to a very small area at night, when you are gone or too busy to watch him constantly it will certainly speed housebreaking. No puppy wants to sleep right beside the mess he has made and so he will make a huge effort to wait until he is PICKED UP AND CARRIED OUTSIDE each morning. But please remember he is a tiny baby when he arrives and can not nor should not be expected to hole his bodily functions more than 4 hours overnight and less during the daytime! This lengthens as he matures.
We recommend keeping your Doberman puppy crated at night until he's approximately 9 months old and has become very dependable. This way they make excellent house dogs for the rest of their lives.
Here are some of our suggestions for Chewing:
Your puppy will chew to help bring in his adult teeth, this is a natural process. He will chew regardless of scolding, etc. The proper solution is to keep him away from valuable chairs, shoes, electric cords and similar items until this stage in his life passes. Keep him away from the run of the house at night and when you are not home to supervise him. Provide him appropriate toys for his necessary tooth development. A crate is a great help when you are not there to watch him.
Here are some of our suggestions for Puppy Training:
We recommend you teach your Unique Doberman puppy to walk on a flexi-lead while he's still a baby along with riding in the car, basic obedience i.e. sit, stay and down, and preliminary show training which includes daily stacking. A flexi lead teaches him that he's not totally confined and has some freedom to play and explore, later when he is getting leash trained you may switch to a leather lead.
Conformation classes are recommended at 4-5 months of age if you think you may want to show your Sunnybrook Doberman for his championship title, if you purchased a working pup then this is the time to continue his working drive. (these tips are for family pets)
We also highly recommend obedience classes while your puppy is young (5-6 months of age) regardless of whether you plan to show him or not.

Crate Training your Doberman Puppy:
At Unique Dobermans we suggest crate training your puppy in a metal or plastic crate, it will provide your puppy with a safe and secure place to sleep in at night or while you are busy or gone.
First off, choose a crate that fits your Doberman puppy at the time, don't purchase a crate that is too big or is big enough for your puppy as an adult, if you buy a crate too large in the beginning he will think the other end is for going potty in.
When you are away from home, take your puppy outside to relieve him/herself and take him to his crate, put his favorite safe toy and an edible treat inside and he will readily go in, close the door and leave. As soon as you return (don't leave them longer than 3 hours in the daytime), immediately go to his crate open the door and carry him outside. (unless he's too big already, in that case put a lead on him and take him outside).

HELP! My Puppy is Chewing and Biting Everything!
So, you've just picked up your new AKC Doberman puppy from the airport and you are beginning your lifelong bond.
Such an exciting and long anticipated day and you want to make sure you do everything perfectly for your new buddy and protector.
You take him outside to do his duties after his long flight and he's running around like nothing happened. This is great, but as soon as you pick him up and take him inside he's looking for something to eat and drink, this is understandable because your Doberman Pinscher puppy just spent the day in transit, even though he's been in his own personal crate and is safe and secure in there, he still will be fatigued just like us when we travel. He will eat and drink, go back outside and it will probably be time for bed.
When he wakes up the second day, you will find a completely different Doberman puppy in the crate! He/she will come out like they own the place and will begin terrorizing the family wanting to play, be doted on and carried around, snuggled on the sofa or big chair and waiting to be taken outside to relieve themselves.
So, now it's the third day and you are beginning to get a routine set and ti's working out pretty well, you're even feeling quite proud of your training skills because your new Doberman is getting potty trained so fast... the thing is ... he's beginning to chew and bite!
So why is this once lovable Doberman puppy chewing and biting everything including our hands and ankles?!?!
Well, for one this is his/her nature and just a stage in their normal development. It is your job to make sure he is chewing on the appropriate toys and not your Prada shoes or Ostrich Cowboy Boots!
When you go to your local pet store make sure you look for all natural dog toys and chew treats, nothing MADE IN CHINA please!
Find durable toys that he can play tug of war with, hardy balls that he can be taught to retrieve for you (for a traded item of value) or for a treat. Keep your puppy chewing on his toys and when he's done put them in a short box that he can reach, he will quickly learn that when he's chewing on the wrong item and is told NO, that he'll be taken to his own personal Toy Box where he can pick out a new toy that can be played with by you Both! It's a win ~ win situation for you both.
Remember, when he's going to be unattended or unwatched, he will need to be in his safe crate, never for more than 2-3 hours at most during the daytime.
As far as him/her "Heeling You", or biting your ankles or hands, take your hand and put it over the top of the muzzle and roll his lips over the top teeth along with a firm NO, then immediately release and forget it ever happened. Do not squeeze his lips on the top teeth so hard that it makes him cry out or he will be afraid and resentful of you, this is not what you want.
If you have a day job and need to leave your puppy for extended times during the day and at night, you will find a very energetic puppy awaiting you. Each morning g before work you have to take time for feeding and playing with your puppy. Sitting inside a crate all night and all morning is not fair on your puppy and will make training him a long a difficult process. Your Doberman will need to be taken outside frequently during the daytime hours, he will need a dog door to come and go as he pleases into a secure area or you will have to hire a dog trainer or walker to take him outside each day.
Ears to post, biting to re-direct and potty training! Whew, yes you will be very busy with your new best friend!
Don't give up too early, you will soon forget these funny and often trying times and you will be left with photographs of this rapidly changing time.
Remember to take lots of photo and video clips, everyone has a cell phone these days ... use it now :)

Teaching your Doberman "Come" or "Here"
The moment you pick your new little bundle of joy up at the airport you are starting his basic training.
Your puppy will be 8 or 9 weeks of age and the training will go much better if you are prepared and ready long before your Unique Doberman puppy arrives.
You will need to show your puppy that his new home is a safe haven just like his old family home was, that you are the leader so not to worry, you've got his back.
Unique Dobermans will not grow up to be confident and successful protectors if they are destined to grow up in an environment of "Punishment and Force" as the only modulators for training.
Too much training at this time can ruin your trust and bond with your puppy. Keep your training light and simple to understand, always rewarding with a high value treat or the favorite toy, taking him outside to play and of course your unending love and affection.

I'm a senior citizen, can I have a Unique Doberman?
YES! Many of our beloved Dobermans live successfully with their older masters, some live in high rise apartments on the east coast in Manhattan to Portland on the west coast, they live and protect their owners on large ranches on hundreds of acres and everything in between.
Many of our Dobermans grow up to be loyal protectors for their aging owners, a simple pat on the head or snuggling on the sofa together, our Dobermans bring comfort, companionship and protection to an aging population.
Often a Doberman keeps their older owners active and healthy, the socialization that comes with owning a Doberman is not to be dismissed either.
We get stopped all the time from older folks that grew up or had a Doberman when younger, they surely miss those days and begin to wonder why they ever lived without one!

The Days of a Puppy
This morning I woke up and kissed my Dad's head , Peed on the carpet and went back to bed.
The life of a pup, oh my, this is great! Then thought about breakfast, I hope I'm not late.
Mom took me outside, we walked for awhile
This never fails to make my mom smile.
I sniffed everything, that we did pass.
I ate something weird - it gave me gas.
It was all so exciting, I forgot to piddle..
I'm sure God loves me, I know that it's true.
He gave me so many great people things to chew.
Rugs, plants, rocks ...I really don't care.
What I truly like best is Dad's underwear.
That obedience book was sort of yummy.
Though it didn't sit well on my poor puppy tummy.
I threw up a bit, but that was alright.
When Mom saw it later, I was well out of sight.
I made streamers of t.p. while running full speed.
Mom is pretty quick but I was still in the lead.
I flew under the bed and Mom flew past.
She stopped, shook her head and breathed "You're too fast."
Mama later phoned Daddy and said it was frightening.
That afternoon she was sure I'd pooped lightning.
She sat at the computer while I chewed the cord,
She thought I was mad, but I was just bored.
When Mom had enough, couldn't take anymore,
That's when my tushy got shoved out the door.
I love it inside, but outside is best.
Laid in the cool grass, and had a good rest.
That didn't last long, there was too much to do ---
I can't remember where I hid Daddy's shoe?
I found an old bone, and scratched at a flea,
I watched the dumb squirrels as they jumped in a tree.
I barked at the kids, when they got off the bus.
I can't figure out why this makes Mama fuss.
I barked at a neighbor, I barked at the wind.
I barked and I barked until Mom yelled "Come in!"
The sun dipped in the west -- soon Dad would come!
I sure love my Daddy, we always have fun.
I barked at my Daddy, then turned on my charms,
I woo-wooed "hello", then jumped in his arms.
Sitting under the table, it's so hard to wait.
Daddy slipped me a goodie right off of his plate.
I raced through the house, and scattered my toys,
Ricocheted off furniture, and made lots of noise.
Mom found her purse - the one I abused.
Dad let loose a chuckle. Mom asked him, "Amused??"
I cowered down low, I must be in trouble.
Dad said, "Wasn't MY boy, it must be his double."
Mom turned off the TV and said "time for bed"
Dad said "Let's go boy" and patted my head.
I got in my spot, between Mom and Dad,
thought about my day, and what fun I had had.
Mama kicked out my bone from the covers below,
Then let loose a sigh --- a sigh deep and low.
She gave me a kiss, and snuggled me tight,
and whispered so softly, "My darling, goodnight".

Every Doberman puppy for sale at Unique Dobermans has been thoughtfully and carefully planned and considered long before the breeding has taken place. Your new Unique Doberman puppy (if you are so lucky to be chosen as one of our elite Doberman puppy owners) comes with a pedigree sporting German, Russian and European Dobermans full of world champion show dogs plus each one has been worked to at least a BH in Schutzhund, IPO, IGP, Family Personal Protection dogs, Therapy dogs, French Ring sports and competitions. What do all of these Doberman working titles and Doberman show titles actually mean to you as a "pet owner" that doesn't plan on showing or titling your Doberman puppy? EVERYTHING! Your new Doberman Puppy's parents have passed strict temperament testing, tracking trials to test their nose and scent capabilities and personal protection courage testing of their character and most importantly their nerves.
The genetics behind your Unique Doberman puppy shows that his genes are free of hip dysplasia, eye diseases, bad temperament and poor conformation.
A Doberman dog that cannot hold up to the extreme athleticism that is required to obtain working titles is a poorly conformed dog and will break down, a Doberman dog that is not readily and willing to immediately obey with a strong desire to please it's master is not a pleasant Doberman to live with inside the home and certainly will never be able to obtain these working titles.
If you have been looking for the best Doberman Family Guard Dogs, with a World Champion pedigree, Schutzhund, IPO, IGP, VPG and ZTP Working Titles in Personal Protection, Tracking, Obedience and Agility with Beauty and Brawn to match then give us a call, text, email or Facebook message.
